W03--Cell-Specific Roles of CFTR in the Airways: Insights into Expression and Function

With improving resolution of research tools, our understanding of CFTR expression and physiology in varying cell types continues to evolve. In this session, we will review CFTR expression throughout the respiratory tract. We will then consider diverse roles that this ion channel may play depending on the cellular context and location, and how these roles may be targeted by next-generation therapeutics.

Learning Objectives:

  • Review state-of-the-art methods of CFTR detection across research specimens and examine the regional distribution of CFTR expression throughout the respiratory tract.
  • Describe the distinct cellular role(s) of CFTR in unique airway cell populations, including the glandular myoepithelium, pulmonary ionocytes, and alveolar cells.
  • Discuss potential strategies to target key airway cell populations using nucleic acid-based therapies.
