Building Self-Trust: What It Is, Why It Matters & How to Support It in CF Care

As cystic fibrosis (CF) care evolves and there are fewer touch points between care teams, patients, and their families, care is happening outside of clinic more than ever. In this interactive session on the critical concept of self-trust, we will use a series of audio-visual montages developed from in-depth interviews to explore how people with CF develop and rely on self-trust in the context of managing their changing health and lives.

Workshop participants will be invited to consider how self-trust functions in the experiences of people with CF and how it may influence a person’s ability to sustain their daily care, communicate with their care teams, and respond to changes in their health. The session will also explore practical approaches for clinicians to recognize, respect, and support development of self-trust in patients in ways that strengthen collaboration and improve care experiences.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe what self-trust is and how self-trust is developed and expressed by adults with cystic fibrosis
  • Identify the role self-trust plays in sustaining daily care, self-advocacy, team collaboration, and adaptation to health changes
  • Reflect on how care team members can honor and support self-trust in ways that help people to partner with their teams
