Beth Smith, M.D. is a Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics at the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, University at Buffalo (UB), where she serves as the Chair for the Department of Psychiatry. Additionally, she serves as the Chief of Behavioral Health for Kaleida Health. Dr. Smith received her medical degree from the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in 2000 and subsequently completed her residency training in general psychiatry and her fellowship in child & adolescent psychiatry also at UB. She had a leadership role in the mental health guidelines in cystic fibrosis and chairs the Mental Health Advisory Committee for the CF Foundation. In 2017, she was awarded the Carolyn and C. Richard Mattingly Leadership in Mental Health Care Award. Dr. Smith also serves as chair of the psychosocial planning committee for the North American Cystic Fibrosis Conference and a member of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation Clinical Research Advisory Board. Dr. Smith’s clinical expertise includes the management of psychiatric diseases in pediatric medical patients. She was inducted into the Emeritus Faculty Chapter of the Gold Humanism Honor Society for serving as an exemplar of providing compassionate patient care and as a role-model physician educator. Dr. Smith is actively involved in research in mental health and its impact on chronic medical conditions and collaboration with primary care providers to improve the public health need of children with mental health problems. She is Principal Investigator of TIDES 2.0: Prevalence and longitudinal course of depression, anxiety, and behavior problems in children with cystic fibrosis under 12 years of age and Mental Health Concerns in Adults with Cystic Fibrosis: Deveopment of a Breif General Mental Health Screener; Site Principle Investigator for a randomized controlled implementation trial of a CF-specific cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and a co-investigator for Project TEACH, which provides consultative services and educational programs to primary care providers across New York state.
