Dr. Jane Gross is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). She received her undergraduate degree and PhD in Oral Biology from UNC. She was a US Army Health Professions Scholarship Program award recipient and received her medical degree at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. She completed Pediatric Residency at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI and completed fellowship training in Pediatric Pulmonology at Boston Children’s Hospital, where she studied IL-17 mediated effects on host-pathogen interactions related to an experimental whole cell pneumococcal vaccine. After fellowship she fulfilled her military obligation as an active duty Army physician, serving for over 14 years, working in a variety of roles, in Hawaii, Colorado, and Washington state as well as deploying in support of Operation Enduring Freedom-Philippines and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Reaching the rank of Colonel, she retired from the US Army Reserve with a total of 25 years of military service.
Dr. Gross's clinical and research interests focus on infection prevention and control with an emphasis on understanding mechanisms of acquisition and transmission of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) among people with cystic fibrosis and other susceptible populations. She developed and led the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation-funded Healthcare-Associated Links in Transmission of nontuberculous mycobacteria (HALT NTM) studies. She has an ongoing trial designed to quantify and analyze healthcare-associated NTM acquisition. She also continues to be active in translational and clinical research.
