Dr. Bouzek is a Pediatric Scientist and Instructor in the Division of Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital in Iowa City, IA. He completed his pediatric residency at Indiana University in Indianapolis, IN (Riley Hospital for Children) and recently completed pediatric pulmonary fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle, WA (Seattle Children's Hospital). As a pediatric pulmonary fellow he worked with Dr. Luke Hoffman at the University of Washington to evaluate the clinical utility of oropharyngeal swabs in monitoring respiratory infection in children with CF on elexacaftor/tezacaftor/ivacaftor using shotgun metagenomic sequencing and investigated how culture-dependent and -independent microbial detection methods differ in their ability to detect CF pathogens from oropharyngeal swabs. Currently, Dr. Bouzek provides clinical care for children with cystic fibrosis and bronchiectasis and is conducting research on early mechanisms of pediatric muco-obstructive lung disease, including cystic fibrosis, and investigating potential gene therapy modalities.
