Dr. Megan Kiedrowski is an Assistant Professor of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care in the Department of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She leads a research group focused on investigating how bacterial interactions with the host and other microbes in the respiratory tract affects colonization and chronic infection. Dr. Kiedrowski did her PhD training in Microbiology at the University of Iowa where she studied Staphylococcus aureus physiology and mechanisms of biofilm formation. As a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Pittsburgh, she developed air-liquid interface cell culture models to evaluate host-pathogen interactions in the cystic fibrosis respiratory tract. At UAB, Dr. Kiedrowski enjoys working with trainees and collaborators in the CF Research Center to further her group’s ongoing studies aimed at improving treatment strategies for people with CF and chronic upper airway infections. Her current research investigates how opportunistic pathogens interact with commensal bacteria in health and disease, and how fluctuations in temperature and nutrient availability in the airway environment affect bacterial colonization, interspecies interactions, and antimicrobial tolerance.
