FCUL-Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisboa
Margarida D. Amaral is Full Professor of Biochemistry/Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisboa (Portugal) and Group Leader at BioISI-Institute of Biosystems and Integrative Sciences (FCUL, Portugal), which she founded. MDA is an alumna of EMBL - European Molecular Biology Laboratory, Heidelberg, Germany (2008-10; 2016) and IGC - Gulbenkian Institute of Science Oeiras, Portugal (1983-93). She is a member of EMBO – European Molecular Biology Organization and of the Lisboa Academy of Sciences, having received several awards, including the Pfizer-SCML Basic Biomedical Research Award and the ECFS – European Cystic Fibrosis Society Annual Award. She was a Visiting Researcher (2012-15) at UniCamp-University of Campinas (SP, Brazil) and since 2023 she is Visiting Professor at the University of Shanghai (China).
Research: Her laboratory focusses primarily on the molecular mechanisms of the genetic disease Cystic Fibrosis (CF) and the translation of this knowledge for the benefit of people with CF. To globally understand the mechanisms of CF, we use transcriptomics, proteomics and functional genomics, namely through high-throughput siRNA functional screens. Recently, we are focussing on the pathways that lead to CF-related cancer. Our results translate into improvements in the clinic for diagnosis, prognosis and theranostics for CF. Author of more than 190 international peer-reviewed publications and 4 patents, with more than 7,000 citations in Scopus, she has been a Highly Cited Researcher (2%) since 2020 (Mendeley, Stanford University) and occupies the number 2 position in Portugal in the area of cell Biology (Research.com).
