Dr. Angela Garinis is an Associate Professor in the Oregon Hearing Research Center at Oregon Health & Science University and a Principal Investigator at the National Center for Rehabilitative Auditory Research (NCRAR) at the VA Portland Health Care System. With a background in audiology and hearing science, her research is dedicated to enhancing hearing and balance care for individuals with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) who undergo potentially ototoxic treatments.
Her current research, supported by National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (KL2TR002370), addresses a critical clinical gap by investigating the neural mechanisms underlying postural control and mobility deficits in PwCF. Through the use of advanced wearable sensors and posturography, Dr. Garinis examines how these impairments correlate with clinical measures of balance and gait performance. She also serves as Principal Investigator on projects funded by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (GARINI19A0, co-PI Rubenstein) and the NIH’s National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (R01 DC017867, co-PI Hunter), both aimed at improving the early identification of individuals at high risk for aminoglycoside-induced hearing loss. In addition to her research leadership, Dr. Garinis co-chairs the International Ototoxicity Management Working Group on Aminoglycosides, contributing to global efforts in advancing clinical guidelines and best practices in ototoxicity monitoring and prevention.
