University of Alabama at Birmingham
Cristina Barilla', PhD, Postdoctoral research fellow, University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Dr Barilla' received her PhD in Genetics, Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Pavia, Italy, in 2018 with a thesis focused on use of gene-editing and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) for disease modeling of an imprinting disorder. During her PhD, she spent one year at the University of California, San Francisco, as visiting student under the mentorship of Dr Dieter Gruenert and began her involvement in gene therapy for Cystic Fibrosis. Since 2019, Dr Barilla' worked with Dr Brian Davis, first at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and now at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, to develop gene correction approaches to restore CFTR function in primary airway stem cells. She has also contributed in the development of iPSC-derived models to study CFTR function and rescue either through gene-correction or drug modulation.
