Melissa Alao, MSW, LICSW, is a Clinical Social Worker with both the Pediatric CF team at Boston Children's Hospital (BCH) and the Adult CF team at BCH/Brigham & Women’s Hospital. Melissa earned her Bachelors and Masters in Social Work from Salem State University in Salem, MA. Melissa has over 20 years of Social Work experience in a number of roles and settings with children, families, teens, and adults with the last four being in CF. She works primarily with adolescents and young adults in both CF programs with a special focus on health care transition leading to the transfer from pediatric to adult care. Since starting in CF, Melissa has spearheaded the implementation of universal social determinants of health (SDoH) screening in both the Pediatric and Adult CF Programs. She is passionate about sharing knowledge and resources with care teams and families to support those within the LGBTQIA+ community, as well as providing a platform to share the ever-important patient perspective about gender-affirming care. Melissa is a community engagement consultant for the PRIDE CF study and served as a member of the CFF Social Determinants of Health Advisory Committee.
