Dr. McCarty studies the impact of mutant CFTR on the airway glucose barrier. Airway ells expressing WT-CFTR exhibit insulin-dependent glucose uptake, but this is disrupted in cells expressing F508del-CFTR. Similarly, cells expresing mutant CFTR have dysregulated tight junctions, which allows more glucose to flow into the airway.
