Denise M. Kay, PhD is the Director of the Newborn Screening Program at the Wadsworth Center, New York State Department of Health. She has worked with the Newborn Screening Program as a Research Scientist since 2009. Her background is in genetics and genetic epidemiology. Her work is focused on addressing challenges in newborn screening, including improving current methods and algorithms, and developing and implementing assays including expanded genetic analysis for existing and 'new' conditions. Denise provides oversight for the genetics components of Cystic Fibrosis newborn screening in New York State, including testing and reporting; she has been involved in several algorithm changes; and she was responsible for onboarding gene sequence analysis for CF screening in 2017, resulting in >80% reduction in referrals.
