National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London
Professor Jane Davies is the Professor of Paediatric Respirology and Experimental Medicine at the Imperial College London National Heart and Lung Institute, and an Honorary Consultant in Paedatric Respiratory Medicine at at the Royal Brompton Hospital (part of Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust).
Jane's clinical and research focus is centred on cystic fibrosis (CF), where she has played a major role in pioneering the development and early-phase clinical testing of CFTR modulator therapies—drugs that now benefit the majority of people living with CF in the UK. Her work has helped extend these therapies to infants and young children, significantly improving long-term outcomes for patients from the earliest stages of life.
Jane co-leads the Respiratory Theme for the NIHR Imperial Biomedical Research Centre and is a current NIHR Senior Investigator. Her research includes the development of sensitive outcome measures for CF, such as lung clearance index (LCI), nasal potential difference (nPD), and inflammatory biomarkers.
Jane has also contributed significantly to the field of gene therapy for CF, playing a key role in the UK Cystic Fibrosis Gene Therapy Consortium’s efforts to develop and evaluate genetic treatments.
In addition to her work on genetics and treatment, Jane is a leading figure in research on lung infection and inflammation in CF, particularly host–pathogen interactions and early airway disease. Her translational research bridges the gap between laboratory science and patient care, with a strong focus on tackling chronic infections such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
Jane was awarded an OBE in 2024 for her services to people with cystic fibrosis and was also elected a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences in the same year. She has been the President of the European Cystic Fibrosis Society since 2024.
