LL11--Systemic Challenges to Care & Workarounds

Care and treatment for cystic fibrosis is provided in the setting of a large and complex network of systems, including hospitals, insurance and pharmaceutical companies, pharmacies, government programs, government agencies, and the sociopolitical climate. These are rarely navigated with ease, sometimes leaving our patients and their families vulnerable to going without necessary care and spending hours of their day advocating for what they most basically need. In this session, we will hear from a diverse group of CF care team members about the systemic challenges they face daily and their ideas and efforts to support patients in navigating them. Presentations will focus on immigration, navigating the pharmaceutical system, and the new development of an urban CF care center through a patient-centered and justice-oriented lens. There will be time for discussion, reflection, and idea-sharing around these and other systemic challenges relevant to session participants.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will analyze a CF care center plan with a goal to reimagine the care-models from a lens of equity, accessibility, and community partnership.
  • Participants should be able to discuss common medication access barriers and ways to navigate insurance, pharmacy, and financial assistance challenges.
  • Participants should be able to formulate a plan to assist patients and families who have an array of immigration challenges related to: affordability of care, accessing care, seeing providers, and obtaining medications.
