John Lowman received his MS in physical therapy from Duke University in 1995 and his PhD in Physiology from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2004. He worked with critically ill patients and those with cystic fibrosis and lung transplantation at Duke University Hospital from 1996 until 2005. He has been a board-certified as a Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Physical Therapy Clinical Specialist since 1999. He is currently an Associate Professor of physical therapy and Directory of Residency Training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He has served on the the American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties and is a site reviewer for the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship Education. He has authored several manuscripts and book chapters related to physical therapy management of patients with cardiorespiratory health conditions, including cystic fibrosis. He has severed on the European Cystic Fibrosis Society's Exercise Working Group, which has published several clinical practice guidelines as well as clinical trial data on the exercise and physical activity in CF. He currently serves as co-chair of a pain management task force for the CF Foundation. His current research interests are related to exercise testing and prescription for persons with cystic fibrosis, including both physical therapy management in acute care as well as outpatient and home-based exercise programs. He also serves as a PT for the adult CF Clinic at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
